If you are woke – you are left. If you are left – you are woke. We blur the concepts, assuming that if you are one, you must also be the other. This is a dangerous mistake, argues Susan Neiman in the book Left is Not Woke. The confusion arises because the woke is motivated by traditionally leftist emotions: the desire to stand with the oppressed and marginalized, and to confront historical crimes. But these emotions are derailed by a series of theoretical assumptions, which ultimately undermine them. As a result, the woke is in conflict with the ideas that have guided the left for more than 200 years: a commitment to universalism, a firm distinction between justice and power, and a belief in the possibility of progress. Without these ideas, the woke will continue to undermine its own goals and wander inexorably and unintentionally to the right. Susan Neiman makes a powerful and passionate call for the left to return to the ideals that built the best of the modern world.
